Haunting CCTV Footage Sheds Light on Iryna Zarutska’s Final Moments

Surveillance video recently released by authorities in Charlotte provides a chilling glimpse into the final, harrowing moments of Iryna Zarutska, a 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee, before she was fatally stabbed aboard a Charlotte light rail train on August 22, 2025.

The Sequence as Seen on Cameras

Zarutska boarded the Lynx Blue Line around 9:46 p.m. wearing her work uniform and seated in front of a man later identified as Decarlos Brown Jr. 

For the first few minutes, she appeared unaware of any threat—scrolling on her phone, with headphones on, according to multiple accounts. 

Roughly four minutes after she boarded, Brown is seen in the footage pulling a pocketknife from his hoodie, opening it, standing up, and suddenly launching a violent attack from behind, striking Zarutska three times. 

The video shows Zarutska’s collapse, with a trail of blood forming as bystanders react—some rushing to assist only after realizing what has transpired. 

Brown is seen walking toward the front of the rail car, removing or adjusting his hoodie, and apparently cleaning or wrapping his bloodied hand before exiting the train at the next stop. 

After disembarking, he was arrested on the platform. A folding knife was recovered near the platform area. 

What the Evidence and Investigations Reveal

According to the FBI-affiliated affidavit, Zarutska suffered one primary stab wound to the neck, along with another small cut (on her left knee) before losing consciousness. 

She remained conscious or semi-conscious for almost a minute before collapsing fully. 

There were no security personnel in the specific rail car in which the attack occurred, though security had been present in other cars. 

Brown reportedly had a criminal history and had been arrested multiple times prior; mental health concerns (including a diagnosis of schizophrenia) have also been raised in relation to his past behavior. 

The U.S. Department of Justice has filed federal charges against Brown, including “committing an act causing death on a mass transportation system,” in addition to state-level first-degree murder charges. 

Reactions, Ethical Concerns & Ongoing Questions

The release of the footage sparked widespread public outrage and debate over transit safety, mental health systems, and bystander responsibility. 

Zarutska’s family has pleaded publicly for people to stop sharing the unedited video out of respect and to prevent further trauma. 

Many observers have highlighted that no known interaction occurred between Zarutska and Brown prior to the attack, reinforcing that it was unprovoked. 

Officials in Charlotte have promised increased security, more patrols on the transit system, and reviews of protocol.
